The 7 Best Cold Plunge Tubs, Tested & Approved

Cold plunging offers many potential benefits, including faster recovery, decreased inflammation, and improved mood, says physical therapist Karena Wu, PT, DPT. It can also help relieve some mental health conditions, like depression and anxiety, through a cross-adaptation of the stress response—meaning it improves your body’s ability to tolerate other stressors, says physical therapist, Jordan Beall, PT, DPT. So overall, plunging can be an incredible addition to your wellness routine.

To find the best cold plunges on the market, we spoke with Wu and Beall to better understand the health benefits of cold plunge pools and how to use one safely. They also helped us understand when to avoid cold plunges, as well as any additional precautions to take when plunging. We then tested 13 highly ranked cold plunge tubs from reputable brands for 540 hours in our daily routines. Our top picks received high scores for ease of setup, ease of use, design, and value.

Cold Plunge Safety

While there are many potential benefits of using a cold plunge tub, it’s important to note that it may not be suitable for everyone. Consult your physician before implementing a cold exposure routine. People with some conditions, including poor circulation, cardiovascular diseases, and blood pressure issues, should be cautious of cold plunging.

Who It’s For

Best for users who need a tub that’s easy to set up and move. Also, if you want precise temperature control.

Why We Love It

Hydragun’s Supertub Cold Plunge easily earns the spot of our top pick because it offers excellent temperature regulation and user versatility. Compared to other models, this inflatable tub is easy to set up, with step-by-step instructions and an automatic air pump. While it’s not too large, it can still fit plungers as tall as 6 feet 8 inches. On the deck we set it up on, it took up about the size of a loveseat.

We love that the chilling system automatically regulates and holds the temperature you set in the onboard display for as long as you want. And we appreciate all the added accessories the tub comes with: a net for daily cleaning, an anti-slip mat to keep it in place, and an inflatable cover that’s super easy to take on and off. Plus, a water balancing kit helps with maintenance and straps that make it easy to move around.

Potential Flaws

  • We felt the app was cluttered, clunky, and hard to navigate, but the tub can be used without it.

Most Valuable Insight

“The pool and lid blew up easily, and the step-by-step instructions were simple to follow. Basically, it just involved filling the pool with water, chilling it, and using the water balancing kit before things were ready to go.” —Riddley S., Verywell Fit product tester

Key Specs:

Size: 36 x 36 x 30 inches | Capacity: 92.5 gallons | Temp Range: -4–102℉ | Indoor/Outdoor: Can be used both indoors and outdoors | Our Overall Rating: 5/5

Who It’s For

Best for users new to cold plunging and don’t want a sizeable financial commitment to get started.

Why We Love It

For a cold plunge experience without the high price tag, we like Lifepro’s Allevachill Recovery Ice Tub. It’s compact but still easily accommodates taller users. One of our testers, who is 6 feet 3 inches in height, fits in the tub with no problems. We also found it easy to set up, fill, and drain. This inflatable tub is durable and sturdy, and we felt comfortable leaving it set up in all weather conditions. And since it doesn’t take up a lot of room, it didn’t overwhelm our space.

The included cover helped keep dirt and debris out, and the carry bag made it easy to pack up and move around. We especially liked the neck support cushion, which was key to helping us relax (as much as possible) in the freezing water. This plunge tub gets the job done at a fair price, helping us realize we don’t need to spend thousands to get the mood-boosting benefits of a cold plunge.

Potential Flaws

  • This tub doesn’t offer digital temperature control, so you must purchase ice each time (which requires some pre-planning).

Most Valuable Insight

Ice Barrel 400 Cold Therapy Training Tool

Pros

  • Rigid, durable construction

  • Hose attachment on the drain

  • Comes with a step stool

Key Specs

Size: 31 x 42 inches | Capacity: 105 gallons | Temp Range: Not applicable | Indoor/Outdoor: Can be used both indoors and outdoors | Our Overall Rating: 4/5

Who It’s For

Best for taller users who want a compact cold plunge tub that still allows submersion up to the neck.

Why We Love It

Ice Barrel’s 400 Cold Plunge is designed to accommodate people up to 6 feet 6 inches tall, making it ideal for tall plungers. We found it super easy to set up—it was ready to go in as little as 20 minutes. We appreciate the insulated walls and lid, which keep the water colder for longer, and the step ladder, which makes it convenient to get in and out of the tub.

When full, the tub weighs up to 930 pounds, which we found makes it stable and durable. Its rigid construction prevents it from flexing when we add water. The tub also features an insulated lid to keep the water cold. And when you’re ready to get rid of dirty water, you can attach a hose to the drain and easily empty the water into a sink or onto your lawn or garden.

Potential Flaws

  • This cold plunge tub doesn’t have a digital chiller and, because of its size, requires a lot of ice. We wish there were an extra port to connect a chiller.

Most Valuable Insight

“You do not need to hire a plumber to help you install this product. When you’re filling it up with water, just remember to leave a good bit of space to account for the volume of you and the ice you add. You may need to drain it some after each use to account for the water added from the melted ice.” —John S., Verywell Fit product tester

Ice Barrel 300

Key Specs

Size: 35.5 x 30.5 inches | Capacity: 77 gallons | Temp Range: Not applicable | Indoor/Outdoor: Can be used both indoors and outdoors | Our Overall Rating: 4.9/5

Who It’s For

Best if you’re tight on space but still want a durable, high-quality tub you can keep out.

Why We Love It

The Ice Barrel 300 is perfect for anyone who doesn’t have a lot of space. Its footprint is smaller than that of many other cold plunge tubs—we were able to easily tuck it into a corner of one tester’s outdoor deck. But despite its smaller footprint, we still found it plenty spacious to fit plungers of all sizes comfortably. And for even more comfort, we appreciated the built-in armrests and backseat.

During testing, we found this barrel super simple to set up. Just fill it with water and ice, and you’re ready to go. It only takes about six minutes to fill completely. This model doesn’t come with a chiller, but you can purchase one separately. One favorite feature, though, is the insulated lid, which kept the water temperature consistent for about 48 hours (even on extremely hot days).

Potential Flaws

  • You either need to purchase a chiller separately or budget for the extra cost of buying ice regularly.

Most Valuable Insight

“It’s comfortable to be in; I can be almost fully submerged, unlike other options. It also doesn’t take up much space—a HUGE benefit.” —Ashley C., Verywell Fit product tester

Size: 67 x 31.5 x 24 inches | Capacity: 75 gallons | Temp Range: Low of 39℉; high range not listed | Indoor/Outdoor: Can be used both indoors and outdoors | Our Overall Rating: 4.6/5

Who It’s For

Best for users interested in investing in a sleek and durable cold plunge tub, and have a permanent location for it.

Why We Love It

Plunge’s Original Cold Plunge Tub has a sleek, stylish design that makes for a pleasant addition to any space. It’s larger than other options on our list, but it’s quite spacious and doesn’t require ice. The included chiller and filter keep the water clean and the temperature consistent. And we appreciate that it has additional features, like an underwater light for late-night plunging, a phone holder, and even a rubber duck for fun.

It’s made from acrylic and fiberglass for durability and would work well indoors or outdoors. It includes a durable, insulated cover, a skimmer net, and treatment chemicals, so you don’t have to empty and refill it with clean water as often as some other options. This tub is not portable, but that’s part of the benefit—the sleek design is durable and spacious enough for everyone in the family to use.

Potential Flaws

  • Since this tub is larger and more heavy-duty than other options, the set up process was complex, but the instructions are very clear and helpful.
  • Unless you don’t mind the expense of a high electric bill by leaving the tub on, you’ll need to allot a couple of hours for cooling down each time you turn on the tub.

Most Valuable Insight

“The Plunge is VERY expensive, but if you want to invest in a top-of-the-line cold plunge, I think this is your best bet. You get what you pay with this one, so if you want to splurge, I 1000% recommend The Plunge.” —Michelle P., Verywell Fit product tester

Size: 76.75 x 31.5 x 28.75 inches | Capacity: 100 gallons | Temp Range: 37–103℉ | Indoor/Outdoor: Can be used both indoors and outdoors | Our Overall Rating: 4.7/5

Who It’s For

Best for experienced cold plungers looking for a high-quality tub that’s always ready to go and easy to control and maintain.

Why We Love It

For tech-savvy people who want a quality plunge experience, we recommend Plunge’s All-In Tub. You can connect the tub to wifi and use the app to control the temperature, the water jets, and the lights. The app also allows you to set reminders for things like changing the filters, deep cleaning the vents, and winterizing the whole tub. We so appreciate how the app makes maintaining this tub easy, helping it fit seamlessly into our routine.

During testing, we also appreciated how well-insulated and spacious the tub is. Its size accommodates a range of body sizes, enabling our testers to submerge their entire bodies into the cold. We found that being able to prep the tub for a plunge through the app made us use it more.

Potential Flaws

  • This plunge tub is heavy (270 pounds, empty) and requires about the space of a bathtub, so it may not fit in all homes or backyards.
  • Even though it’s pricey, the tub’s high-quality features make it worth the splurge.

Most Valuable Insight

“The Plunge All-In is definitely a splurge pick, but the performance, design, and community behind The Plunge brand and this product make the ice bath a must-buy if it’s within your budget and fits with your lifestyle.” —John S., Verywell Fit product tester

Saunabox PlungeBox Pro

PHOTO: Saunabox

Key Specs:

Size: 32 x 29 inches | Capacity: 79 gallons | Temp Range: Not applicable | Indoor/Outdoor: Can be used both indoors and outdoors | Our Overall Rating: 4.7/5

Who It’s For

Best for users new to cold plunging who want to experience the benefits without the commitment to a larger, more expensive option.

Why We Love It

Saunabox’s PlungeBox Pro is a great choice for anyone new to cold plunges thanks to its 15-minute setup and ease of use. During testing, one tester was able to set up the tub alone with no trouble, and emptying and cleaning were a breeze thanks to its lightweight design. The hexagonal shape provides a durable structure and foam panels offer improved insulation. Plus, for faster chilling and colder temperatures, you can purchase a chiller (sold separately).

This plunge tub comes with a fitted lid, a tarp cover that fits over the entire tub, a carrying case, and a hand pump. We found it stable and balanced when full, and it was large enough to comfortably submerge our neck and shoulders. The inflatable rim was a nice touch, offering cushioned support for the head and neck. We also appreciated that it took only about 10 minutes to chill after adding ice, making it ready to use quickly.

Potential Flaws

  • Without purchasing a chiller separately, this tub requires ice each time you use it.
  • During testing, we found that the fitted lid sits loosely on the tub, and the tarp cover is small, so neither stays in place very securely.

Most Valuable Insight

“My favorite thing was how easy it was to setup and empty/clean. At first I questioned the need for something as portable as this, because it’s not like you’ll be traveling with it, but in terms of cleaning it and moving it around, the lightness of the plunge really helps.” — Robert T., Verywell Fit product tester

Cold Plunge Tubs We Also Tested

We tested 13 cold plunge tubs in total, but only seven met our high standards. While these options had features we liked, they ultimately weren’t impressive enough to earn a spot on our list.

  • The Ice Pod provided a pleasant enough cold plunge experience, but we found it hard to inflate, even with the included pump. Plus, even though it’s more of a budget option, we had to use such a substantial amount of ice that it ended up being pricier than more expensive picks on our list.
  • We found Sun Home’s Cold Plunge large enough for plungers as tall as 6 feet 8 inches. However, the ill-fitting cover, and the fact that it took all day to cool down to 60 degrees, left us unimpressed with this option.

What We’ve Updated

  • Since our initial tests, we have continued to test cold plunge tubs in the real world to collect additional information on their performance.
  • We have also added four additional products to this round of testing.
  • Based on the most recent test results, we updated our Best Budget choice and added a Best for Beginners choice.

What to Look for When Shopping for Cold Plunge Tubs

  • Size and Capacity: You should be able to fit your whole body comfortably in the tub while keeping your head out of the water, Beall says. Keep in mind, larger capacity tubs will require more water and ice to cool fully, or they may take longer or use more energy to cool down. Make sure you choose a tub that you can easily fit into and is not difficult to submerge in. You’ll also need to consider the space you have to set up the tub and make sure there’s room to maneuver around it.
  • Material: Different materials are better suited to different systems, like an electric chiller versus ice. We prefer durable materials like acrylic, fiberglass, and reinforced metal. If you are not interested in options with a chiller, consider insulating materials for the best experience.
  • Temperature Control: Plunge tub options that require water and ice offer you less control over the temperature. Pricier options that include a chiller offer more precise temperature control, with some models even featuring an app for easy adjustments. Beall suggests a temperature of 53 degrees Fahrenheit for an optimal experience and maximum benefits.
  • Special Features: Depending on your budget, your cold plunge tub can offer many special options. Some features that might enhance your experience include built-in lights for night plunging, water circulation jets, a ladder for taller options like a barrel, and insulated covers to keep the water cool and clean when not in use.
  • Warranty: Because cold plunge tubs can be pricey, it’s worth choosing one with a warranty. Consider the length of the warranty and the parts and service included.

How We Tested the Cold Plunge Tubs

To find the best cold plunge tubs, we tested 13 models for a total of 540 hours of plunging. We selected our picks based on the following key criteria.

  • Ease of Setup: Cold plunge tubs are generally not ready to use right out of the box. They require some form of setup, even if it’s just filling them with water. To assess ease of setup, we note whether assembly is quick and simple or time-consuming and requiring extra hands. We also note if additional plumbing is needed or if we simply need to fill it with water and plug it in.
  • Ease of Use: We pay attention to how long it takes for the tub to cool down, how easy it is to fill, and how often it needs to be refilled. If the tub has special features, like lights or filters, we evaluate how easy they are to use. Lastly, we consider whether the included instructions are clear and whether it’s easy or difficult to incorporate the cold plunge into our regular routine.
  • Design: Next, we measure the space each tub requires, noting whether certain models are better suited for those with limited space. We record whether the tub comes with accessories, like a cover or remote control, and whether any included accessories improve the overall experience. While using the tub, we assess how spacious the inside is and if we can fully submerge our body. We prioritize tubs that can accommodate a wide range of body types.
  • Value: To assess each tub’s overall value, we wait until the end of the testing period to check the price. We then consider whether, based on our thorough testing, we would personally purchase or recommend the tub to a friend.

Benefits of Using a Cold Plunge Tub

Sitting in a cold tub will do a lot more than just earn you strange looks and likes on a social media post. Some benefits include:

  • Inflammation Management: Wu says that a cold plunge tub can help reduce swelling and pain, which will, in turn, assist with recovery.
  • Immune Health: Triggering your body’s stress response with cold plunging can enhance the immune system, Wu says, by increasing your metabolic rate and spiking a neurohormone that’s crucial for the body’s response to stress.
  • Improved Mood: When exposed to the cold, emotion-regulating hormones may be released, improving mood and mental acuity, and reducing stress, Wu says.
  • Exercise Recovery: Beall says that the decrease in intramuscular temperature and metabolism during cold exposure can limit hypoxic stress and generate reactive oxygen species, resulting in boosted recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I cold plunge for optimal benefits?

Wu suggests two or three times per week, emphasizing that the body needs time to recover, so anything more frequent is not ideal.

How long should I stay in a cold plunge tub?

Start slowly and gradually increase to no more than five to ten minutes. According to Wu, however, two to three minutes is ideal.

Are there any health conditions that make it unsafe to cold plunge?

Always talk to your primary care physician before starting cold exposure therapy. People with heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, poor circulation, venous stasis, cold agglutinin disease, sensory defects, and certain cognitive deficits should exercise caution when cold plunging, Beall says.
